People don’t understand that being Puerto Rican or from any hispanic places is a nationality not a race there are white,black,asian and brown Puerto Ricans. I have this one women in my class and she’s from Brazil, her skin is the same skin tone as mine, her hair is as coarse as mine but she has a relaxer and her features are like mine but when she’s described as black people say she’s not black she’s Brazilian. She’s Brazilian but she’s black, she’s a black Brazilian.What i don’t understand is when people describe a black person and there is a person with all that discription who is clearly black but born in a hispanic area and that all changes. Why are they no longer black anymore? they just are born in another area it doesn’t change anything. It’s like a white or black person born and raised in china, they are chinese because they are from china but they are still a white person and a black person. It’s like me saying i’m not black i’m Canadian like Canadian is a race.

What you said was 100% correct,but don’t drive yourself crazy trying to understand it.From what I can tell,black is a bad thing to be in those places,you even have people from here doing the same thing,they hate being called black

The reason why most people, even American blacks, reject black is because the term black is associated with so much negativity, even by black people. Black, in the USA, is nothing more than an Americanized form of identification involving connotations with the skin color of people of African descent. To some other nations it is not as offensive. People in that region reject the term because in most situations their race isn’t very important and they identify with nationality. They’re not rejecting their African ancestry, they’re rejecting being called a term that uses their skin color as a means of identification. I do not see why it makes people so uncomfortable to the point where they must reject that person’s Caribbean/foreign identity and force them to succumb to the racist ways of this nation.
I hate it most when ignorant people cite racism as the reason why that person is black. How is that going to help the cause? That’s the reason why they reject the term in the first place.

Gotta disagree with some of this.People reject being called black,because they’ve been taught to do so.Your sugar coating what’s going on,for generations now people have been taught to see black as ugly plain and simple.The lighter or whiter you are the better,that’s the truth.That’s why they have come up with some many different names to keep from being called black(dirty Indian,wheat,etc).Why a certain kind of hair is preferred,or the shape of the nose.I saw a story the other day,about a club in the D.R.The story stated that the owner would not allow any black person in the club:
http://www.dominicantoday.com/dr/local/2010/7/8/36255/No-blacks-no-gays-Dominican-Republic-bar-sticks-by-its-ways
Now I’m confused here,I saw some of the pictures of the people who were allowed into the club.Now I have 20/20 vision,and to me they looked like black people(excuse me,black Latinos).Now they say we want to be seen by their culture first,but that’s only because so many of them would be seen as black anywhere else.Now since the 1400′s to now black has been seen as bad,that’s honest truth

No there’s no sugar coating it but that is the reason some actually do. They just don’t identify as that or it was non existent. Ive met people like that personally. I was never taught to reject the term black yet I personally reject it in most situations because my skin is not black it’s brown and my ancestors don’t come from Blackland they are from Africa. Just as I don’t believe white people to be white, they are more pinkish. Their ancestors don’t come from Whiteland they are from Europe.
Black has become synonymous with negativity as I said but not all people reject it for the same reason. As I’ve learned some people are actually taught that they are a completely different ethnicity.

@Gem
Well I do understand what your saying,but the funny thing is no ones skin is actually black or white;were all brown.Now you reject the name black,but you accept the name Africa,which was not the original name of the place;The name Africa also came from the Euro’s.Also while it was never called Blackland,it was funny enough called Negroland:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/82/Negroland_and_Guinea_with_the_European_Settlements%2C_1736.jpg/800px-Negroland_and_Guinea_with_the_European_Settlements%2C_1736.jpg
This is of course after they stop calling black people Moors,and change to Negro.However most of the name Euro’s and others gave for Africans,like (Bilad Al Sudan,Sudan,Aethiopia,Ethiopia etc)meant land of the black,or burnt face.Sorry got off on something else.Anyhow I’m all for them saying they are a different group,because they have gone through different things.They have different traditions,language etc,that’s all well and good.But they as others have stated,will look you in the face,and say you are a black person.However when they are as dark as the Ace of spades,will tell you that they’re not;because they are Latino.Now in what cosmic universe does that make any sense?I mean you can put a suit on a duck,but it will still be a duck

Drew Sidora & Meagan Good are two completely different women. Drew was on The Game before BET took over the show, Meagan was in the first episode of the show this season as you might know her character had an affair with Malik.

I dont see why people feel as though she has to prove herself. If she is more than black what the hell is she supposed to do? Disrespect her ancestors who aren’t by saying “I’m just black cuz that’s what the world wants me to be and that’s what they think I look like.”
And a question why the hell is it that when a black person or a person who looks black claims they are anything other than black, they have to prove themselves? Why the hell can’t we just be mixed? Why do people focus so much on our skin color?
I am a proud mixed race person regardless of my skin color

Your words(typical BLACK American. they just want to be and feel exotic)Now really,how many have you met?Pretty much every black person I’ve met,no matter their skin or hair ,just says they’re black,they don’t try to be anything else.Now Meagan might be a little different

I meant typical black american from MY experiences. I cannot tell you how many times black americans I know try to cling on to every race & ethnicity (which 90% of the time they don’t even have), except their own. It’s typical where I’m from. You can’t discredit what I said if I’m speaking from MY experience, which differs from yours. Same w/ you Rebellious.
