Marlene was the daughter of Wilhelmine/Wilhelmina Elisabeth Josephine/Josefine (Felsing/Falsing) and Louis Erich Otto Dietrich. She was married to assistant director Rudolf Sieber, until his death. They had a daughter, actress, writer, and activist Maria Riva. Among their grandchildren are production designer J. Michael Riva and literary agent and producer Peter Riva.

Marlene’s paternal grandfather was named Christian Dietrich (the son of Conrad Dietrich and Marie Louise).

Marlene’s paternal grandmother was Ottilie Auguste Wilhelmine Otto (the daughter of Michael Friedrich Otto and Friedericke Wilhelmine Flügge).
