Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is a Portuguese politician. He has served as President of Portugal, since 9 March, 2016. He has also been Secretary of State for the Premiership, from 4 September, 1981 to 13 June, 1982, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, from 12 June, 1982 to 9 June, 1983, President of the Social Democratic Party, from 29 March, 1996 to 1 May, 1999, and Leader of the Opposition, from 29 March, 1996 to 1 May, 1999.

He is the son of Maria das Neves Fernandes Duarte and Baltasar Rebelo de Sousa (Baltasar Leite Rebelo de Sousa). His father was a politician, who was a minister, member of parliament, and medicine professor. He has two children with his wife Ana Cristina da Gama Caeiro da Mota Veiga.

Marcelo is a Roman Catholic.

He has said that his mother had some degree of Jewish ancestry. It is not clear if this Jewish ancestry has been verified/documented.

Marcelo’s paternal grandfather was António Joaquim Rebelo de Sousa (the son of Manuel Joaquim Rebelo de Sousa and Feliciana de Jesus). António was born in Cabeceiras de Basto, Pedraça, Paço de Vides. Feliciana was the daughter of José Mendes de Magalhães and Teresa Dias do Nascimento de Jesus.

Marcelo’s paternal grandmother was Joaquina Leite da Silva (the daughter of Manuel da Silva and Deolinda Leite). Joaquina was born in Gandarela, São Clemente, Celorico de Basto. Manuel was the son of José da Silva and Ana de Meireles. Deolinda was the daughter of Francisco da Costa and Teresa Leite.

Marcelo’s maternal grandfather was Alferes Joaquim das Neves (the son of José Antunes das Neves and Maria Florência). Joaquim was born in Covilhã, Erada. José was the son of Francisco de Jesus and Maria Antunes. Marcelo’s great-grandmother Maria was the daughter of José Antunes Castanheira and Maria Florencia.

Marcelo’s maternal grandmother was Maria Rosa Fernandes Duarte (the daughter of Manuel Fernandes Duarte and Leonor Rosa). Marcelo’s grandmother Maria Rosa was born in Covilhã.
