Lou Reed was an American musician, singer, songwriter, and poet. He was the guitarist and vocalist of the American rock band The Velvet Underground, and had a prominent solo career.

Lou was the son of Toby (Futterman) and Sidney Joseph Rabinowitz, and grew up in Freeport, New York. He was married to avant-garde artist, composer, musician, and film director Laurie Anderson, until his death.

Lou’s paternal grandfather was Mendel Rabinowitz (the son of Solomon Rabinowitz and Mollie Novack/Novick). Mendel was born in Russia.

Lou’s paternal grandmother was Fannie Weinberg (the daughter of Yierma Weinberg and Slova Beckman). Fannie was born in Russia.
