Krist Novoselic is an American musician and political activist. He co-founded, and was the bassist for, grunge band Nirvana. Part of the Seattle grunge scene, the band is particularly known for its song “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” He later formed alternative rock band Sweet 75 and three-piece rock supergroup Eyes Adrift, and was a member of one-shot punk rock band The No WTO Combo, punk rock band Flipper, alt-rock supergroup Filthy Friends, and rock band Giants in the Trees. He contributed bass and accordion playing to Foo Fighters song “I Should Have Known.” He has written a political and music-themed column for the Seattle Weekly, and was on the board, and served as chair, of electoral reform organization FairVote; and chair of Zócalo Public Square. Other members of Nirvana were Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl, as well as Aaron Burckhard, Dale Crover, and Jason Everman. Jello Biafra and Kim Thayil were also members of The No WTO Combo. Peter Buck was also a member of Filthy Friends.
He is the Cascade Party of Washington’s nominee for President of the United States in 2024.
Krist is the son of Croatian emigrants, Marija/Mary (Mustach) and Krsto Novoselić. Krsto is from Iž. Marija is from Privlaka, Zadar County. In 1980, his parents sent him to live with relatives in Zadar, Croatia, then part of SFR Yugoslavia. He returned to Aberdeen, Washington in 1981.
Krist is married to artist Darbury Ayn Stenderu, with whom he has two children.
