by ethnic on May 13, 2008

Birth Name: Kimila Ann Basinger

Place of Birth: Athens, Georgia, U.S.

Date of Birth: December 8, 1953

Ethnicity: English, as well as some German, Scottish, Scots-Irish (Northern Irish), and distant French

Kim Basinger is an Academy Award-winning American actress, fashion model, and singer. She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for L.A. Confidential (1997). She has a daughter, model and actress Ireland Baldwin, with her former husband, actor Alec Baldwin.

Kim is the daugher of Ann Lee (Cordell) and Donald Wade Basinger. Much of Kim’s ancestry is English, and she also has some Scottish and Scots-Irish (Northern Irish), as well as distant French, roots. Her surname, Basinger, is usually of German origin.

At the 1990 Academy Awards, Arnold Schwarzenegger introduced Kim as being “part Cherokee Indian and part Swedish. Talk about a smorgasbord!” Kim stated on Inside the Actors Studio (1999), that her maternal grandmother had Cherokee Native American ancestry. It is not clear if this Cherokee Native American ancestry has been verified/documented. Kim’s maternal grandmother is listed as “White” on U.S. Censuses, as are Kim’s maternal grandmother’s parents. Kim’s ancestry, as far as can be documented, is non-Native American. Similarly, no Swedish ancestry has been documented among Kim’s genealogy.

Kim’s paternal grandfather was Michael Herman Basinger, Sr. (the son of Richard Basinger and Elizabeth “Lizze” Pheby Pence). Richard was the son of John Calvin Basinger and Marinda Augusta Cromwell. Elizabeth was the daughter of Michael S. Pence and Sara Julia Kirk.

Kim’s paternal grandmother was Jessie Belle/Jessiebelle Ashley (the daughter of Clarence Allen Ashley and Carrie May Ellis). Clarence was the son of Jesse Thomas Ashley and Milly Catharine Abel. Carrie was the daughter of Richard Archibald Ellis and Mary Matildia “Mamie” Pressy.

Kim’s maternal grandfather was James Cullen Cordell (the son of James Lindsey Cordell and Morning/Mourning Ann Shiflett/Shiflet). Kim’s great-grandfather James was the son of Thomas J. Cordell and Lindsey Jane Cunningham. Morning was the daughter of John P. Shiflett and Morning Ann Taylor.

Kim’s maternal grandmother was Mamie Elizabeth Howard (the daughter of John James Howard and Hannah Webb). John was the son of George Howard and Sarah Ann Heron. Hannah was the daughter of Samuel M. Webb and Caroline Branyon.

I wonder if she is trying to ‘sex up’ her ethnic background by claiming to be Swedish and part Native. Despite that, the spelling of her first name, Kimilla, is surprising. Can’t see where that comes from with respect to the listed ethnicities.

Never the less, if you’re how I think you are, maybe I better leave you alone. much later

Buying a blow up doll or fleshlight to relieve stress.I’m guessing you’re speaking from a personal experience . Now everyone can see that these are the type of things you’re into( literally). But wait, are you using the fleshlight while you’re standing in the window, watching those poor little kids going to school, you’re sick. Please don’t reply back

On Inside the Actors Studio, Kim Basinger stated that her maternal grandparents’ marriage was controversial because her grandmother was Native American and her grandfather was not.

Elizabeth Warren has stated a similar story.

ashash July 6, 2014 at 6:55 pm

Her daughter, Ireland, claimed that she was Cherokee Indian after coming under fire for wearing a racist Native American costume on Halloween.

follers July 6, 2014 at 7:01 pm

Ireland’s father, Alec Baldwin, is a full-blooded Cherokee, and her mother Kim is about one half. So I think Ireland more than qualifies for tribe membership.

You know I agree with the indian part like it is so special to be native american big deal and I bet that many actors make it up to sound cool.

The Basingas were a Saxon family grouping who settled in Britain during the anglosaxon settlement. Basingstoke is named after them.

Actually… 95% European 5% Native American. Enough for me to say… she’s hot because she is 5% Native American. I don’t care what other people say

COMMONSENSE January 7, 2012 at 4:55 pm

she is hot cause she is 5% Cherokee? lmao! that is entirely too stupid for me to take it seriously.

why do all of the white celebrities claim they are Cherokee? I am really fed up with people trying to play up themselves by mentioning they have a drop of native American blood. all of these people are not native. Jesus

nnnnn August 29, 2012 at 11:43 am

Not only cherokee (I wouldn’t be surprise, that american
people have some cherokee blood), they are all “mongols”, too!

erik June 1, 2011 at 4:21 am

Many beautiful have indian blood why would any one want to dis-claim there indian blood… .Let them claim the blood why jump the gun and say they just look white…

ethnic January 11, 2010 at 12:28 pm

Tian, thanks for the comment. I noticed that celebs who assume they have Native American ancestry have a DNA test they realize that the percentage of Native American blood is a lot less than they expected.

I think most of the native american ancestry claims are real, not all though. But to simply make up such a claim would be pretty silly. Some are based on rumors, and most turn out to be true. I wonder myself just what percentage of “white” people in the US have some native. A lot of old stock pioneer families have it, especially in the south (Kim Basinger was born in Georgia) but also in other places, Ashton Kutcher is from Iowa. There is something about Kim’s that deviates from a purely european look, if you look beyond the hair eye coloring… her lips and facial structure… it’s more visible in some of her younger pics. Contrary to latin american countries, where the white contribution is (darker) spanish, in the US you have a lot of people from Holland, England, Scandinavia. So they still look “white” despite native ancestry.

im kira December 27, 2009 at 1:49 pm

@ethnic, that is right, alot of celebs do say they have native american in them. I dont see it at all in her. She dosent look exotic to me at all.

ethnic December 27, 2009 at 1:13 pm

Angelo, I dont think a majority have Native American blood. I think a significant portion do but not most. Also I think a lot of celebs like to say they have Native blood to give them an exoticness.

Checking out this site it amazes me how many americans have some native american indian blood. It seems very few are of pure european heritage.

ethnic September 12, 2009 at 8:15 pm

Interesting. I know that a Cherokee tribe has their headquarters in Oklahoma.

jessica September 12, 2009 at 2:08 pm

Always knew she was German and the Swedish part doesn’t surprise me but didn’t know she was part Cherokee. A lot of people are part Cherokee where I’m from (Oklahoma) even if they have blonde hair and blue eyes lol.
