Julia Gillard is an Australian politician. She served as Prime Minister of Australia, from 24 June, 2010 to 27 June, 2013. She has also been a Member of the Australian Parliament for Lalor, from 3 October, 1998 to 5 August, 2013, Leader of the Labor Party, from 24 June, 2010 to 26 June, 2013, and the 8th Chair of the Commonwealth of Nations, from 28 October, 2011 to 27 June, 2013, among other duties.

Prime Minister Gillard is Australia’s first female Prime Minister.

Prime Minister Gillard is the daughter of Moira (Mackenzie) and John Oliver Gillard. Her father was born in Barry, Wales, to English parents, and had English, Irish, and possibly Scottish, ancestry. Her mother was also born in Barry, of Irish, English, and Scottish descent.

Prime Minister Gillard’s paternal grandfather was Harold Ralph Gillard (the son of Samuel Edward Gillard and Lucretia Helena Ashman). Samuel was born in Buttevant, County Cork, Ireland. Lucretia was born in Monmouthshire, Wales, the daughter of English parents, Joseph William Ashman and Harriet Eliza Gibbs, from Somerset.

Prime Minister Gillard’s paternal grandmother was Edith Mary Badman (the daughter of William Badman and Frances “Fanny” Bennett). William was the son of Benjamin Badman and Eliza Gunningham. Eliza might have had some Scottish ancestry, through her surname “Gunningham”.

Prime Minister Gillard’s maternal grandfather was Alexander McKenzie/Mackenzie (the son of John D. McKenzie/Mackenzie and Alice Fox). John was born in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England, the son of Daniel McKenzie, who was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, and of Clara/Clare Butler, who was English. Alice was born in Chepstow, Monmouth, Wales, the daughter of English parents, Joseph Fox and Ann Dead.

Prime Minister Gillard’s maternal grandmother was Eileen Margaret Dalton/Dolton (the daughter of Edward Dalton and Mary Catherine Power). Edward was born in Sully, Glamorgan, Wales, to Irish immigrants, from County Tipperary, Edward Dalton and Margaret Organ or Regan. Mary Catherine was born in Lancarvan, Glamorgan, Wales, to Irish parents, John Power and Mary Hannifan.
