José María Aznar is a Spanish politician. He served as Prime Minister of Spain, from 4 May, 1996 to 16 April, 2004. He was also President of the People’s Party, from 1 April, 1990 to 2 October, 2004, and Leader of the Opposition, from 21 November, 1989 to 4 May, 1996, among other duties.

Prime Minister Aznar’s father, Manuel Aznar Acedo, was an army official, journalist and radio broadcaster. Prime Minister Aznar’s mother, Elvira López-Valdivieso Panadero, was born in Oviedo, Asturias, to parents from Valladolid, Valladolid.

Prime Minister Aznar is married to politician Ana Botella Serrano, who served as Mayor of Madrid, from 27 December, 2011 to 13 June, 2015. The couple has three children.

Prime Minister Aznar’s patrilineal ancestry can be traced back to his ninth great-grandfather, Pedro Aznar, of Lobera de Onsella, Zaragoza.
