José Manuel Barroso is a Portuguese politician and university teacher. He has served, in Portugal, as Minister of Foreign Affairs, from 12 November, 1992 to 28 October, 1995, President of the Social Democratic Party, from 1 May, 1999 to 12 November, 2004, and the 115th Prime Minister, from 6 April, 2002 to 17 July, 2004, among other duties; and as the 11th President of the European Commission, from 22 November, 2004 to 31 October, 2014.

Prime Minister Barroso is the son of Maria Elisabeth de Freitas Gomes Durão and Luís António Saraiva Barroso. He was married to Maria Margarida Sousa Uva, until her death, with whom he has three children.

Prime Minister Barroso’s paternal grandfather was Luis Antonio Adão de Morais e Castro Barroso (the son of Francisco António de Morais e Castro Barroso and Verónica Maria da Piedade Adão). Luis was born in Água Revês, Vila Real District, Portugal. Francisco was the son of João de Morais and Delfina Bernarda Barroso.

Prime Minister Barroso’s paternal grandmother was Maria Julia Pinto Saraiva Cardoso (the daughter of Francisco Manuel Saraiva Cardoso and Maria da Piedade Pinto Saraiva). Prime Minister Barroso’s grandmother Maria was born in Valpaços Municipality, Vila Real District, Portugal. Francisco was the son of José António Cardoso Adão and Henriqueta Jesuina Pinto Saraiva. Prime Minister Barroso’s great-grandmother Maria was the daughter of João Bernardino Pinto Saraiva.
