José de San Martín was an Argentine general, and the prime leader of the southern part of South America’s successful struggle for independence from the Spanish Empire. He was Governor of Cuyo, from 10 August, 1814 to 24 September, 1816, Protector of Peru, from 28 July, 1821 to 20 September, 1822, a Member of the Third Triumvirate, from 18 April, 1815 to 20 April, 1815, and Founder of the Freedom of Peru, Founder of the Republic, Protector of Peru, and Generalissimo of Armas (ad honorem), all, from 20 September, 1822 to 17 August, 1850, his death. He was known as the “Liberator of Argentina, Chile, and Peru.”

His parents, Gregoria Matorras del Ser and Juan Jose de San Martín y Gómez, were Spanish, from Palencia. His father was a soldier, from Cervatos de la Cueza, and was Governor of the Yapeyú Department, part of the Government of the Guaraní Missions, administering the thirty Guaraní Jesuit missions. His mother was from Paredes de Nava. He was married to María de los Remedios de Escalada y La Quintana, until her death, with whom he had a daughter.

José’s paternal grandfather was Andrés de San Martín de la Riguera (the son of Lorenzo de San Martín de Castro Diez and María de la Riguera). Andrés was born in Cervatos De Cueza, Palencia. Lorenzo was the son of Hernando de San Martín and María Castro Diez.

José’s paternal grandmother was named Isidora Gómez (the daughter of José Gómez and María). Isidora was born in Cervatos De Cueza, Palencia.

José’s maternal grandfather was Domingo Matorras y González (the son of Juan Matorras and Catalina González de Nava). Domingo was born in Santander, Cantabria.

José’s maternal grandmother was María del Ser y Antón (the daughter of Blas del Ser and Gregoria Antón). María was born in Paredes de Nava.
