I would love to see his DNA results. He definitely is part Native American, possibly some Spanish or Mexican or both. Texas has a very interesting racial history.

pookerella May 14, 2017 at 5:35 pm

Or French, too, it was part of the Louisiana Purchase.

andrew May 15, 2017 at 12:35 pm

“Mathis” surname is French. It’s also interesting thar his father carried an Italian, or Spanish, middle name.

follers May 15, 2017 at 5:52 pm

I doubt his father’s middle name, “Lorenzo”, had anything to do with him having Italian or Spanish ancestry. The name was common among English-speaking Americans in the 19th century.

There are many people named “Mathis” who are not of French origin.

andrew July 19, 2017 at 5:37 pm

“Mathis”: from French “Métis”= mixed race

Come again?

Americans are taking that ‘One Drop’ rule way too far.

fuzzybear44 October 30, 2016 at 1:06 am

What do you mean?

midori29 August 19, 2018 at 9:54 am

@Kimmel your comment reflects, envy and hatred for Africans. African Americans are overwhelmingly usually 50 percent or more black African. That’s a heck of alot more than one drop.

neiltennant August 19, 2018 at 10:53 am

he looks younger

phaedra March 22, 2016 at 10:53 pm

Definitely multiracial – European, black and native.

slowdive February 1, 2016 at 7:51 pm

Dude looks straight Indian.

Adrian1Cram February 6, 2016 at 11:43 am

I say mexican.

fuzzybear44 December 18, 2015 at 7:15 pm

he obviously is more than African decent

Well he is an American black person, so him being more than just of African descent, isn’t that big of a surprise. However, his isn’t a first generation mix that’s for sure

andrew December 19, 2015 at 2:23 am

Johnny Mathis Parents ethnicity: Mix race.
Mother – American Indian Atakapa of Choctaw Decent. Father – African/French Creole.

cwm85 December 19, 2015 at 9:14 pm

Thanks Andrew of course Fuzzybear get all defensive about pointing out Johnny’s other mix instead of black. Its seems some people can’t accept African and other mixtures. Some of these afro eccentric people are worse than the kkk, white supremacist. They all have a malady that needs curing.

fuzzybear44 December 19, 2015 at 10:55 pm

Men you so far off. All I said was that he was not a first gen mix. You’re the one who got all defensive and went off on some crazy tantrum. My Father is of Choctaw and Louisiana Creole descent, and my mother is Louisiana Creole and Seminole ,so why would I hate on Johnny Mathis. You first gen are a little to touchy

fuzzybear44 December 19, 2015 at 10:38 pm

That facebook page isn’t a good source. All the sites about his father says negro or mulatto and mom black. I’m not saying his mom wasn’t partially indian, Choctaw were know for their black members

andrew December 20, 2015 at 6:58 am

yes anybody can write anything on facebook. I found this Johnny’s parents picture.

His dad looked like Giancarlo Esposito (from the side)

fuzzybear44 December 20, 2015 at 11:13 pm

Yes I saw that pic doing my research, and you’re right his does look like Giancarlo(especially doing school daze). Something else I see in that pic atleast to me, is that the mom didn’t look full indian
even from these pics, I don’t see the black bloodline coming from just the father. I don’t see these kids as just 25% black:

Well all I was saying despite what some might want to believe, is that he is not a first gen mixs that’s all

andrew December 21, 2015 at 5:09 am

his mom is certainly not full “Indian”.

midori29 August 19, 2018 at 9:47 am

Andrew that does not matter, all African Americans have some other ethnicity. I don’t know why that’s not hard for most people to comprehend. What makes people African American is the overwhelming MAJORITY of thier DNA is BLACK AFRICAN period. That’s why it’s not African but African American. Get over it.

andrew August 20, 2018 at 3:42 am

Mr Mathis wasn’t publicly DNA tested so we can’t say how much African/European/Native American or what else he is, and if he’s over 50% SSA

cwm85 December 19, 2015 at 9:11 pm

Wrong. His mother was native american. And his dad was mixed. First generation mixed.

follers December 19, 2015 at 10:25 pm

His mother was black, or at least part black.

fuzzybear44 December 19, 2015 at 10:30 pm

Thank you follers

follers December 19, 2015 at 10:35 pm

Oh, and Johnny’s paternal grandparents were both black, for sure. So I guess that’s not a “first generation” mix.

fuzzybear44 December 19, 2015 at 10:43 pm

Again thank you. I don’t get it, you simply stated something that is supposed to be factual, and peole get mad

andrew December 20, 2015 at 6:59 am

well, at some point anyboby with black blood was considered black, right?

fuzzybear44 December 20, 2015 at 11:51 pm

(well, at some point anyboby with black blood was considered black, right?)

Well that’s true, but it often change from state to state, and decade. Well right now it’s the other way around So even if you do have black ancestry in you but look white, you’re said to be white. I mean no one going to call Craig Cobb black, even if he is part black(right?)

andrew December 21, 2015 at 5:06 am

I don’t know Cobb’s family history but 14% SSA is huge, I mean in Puerto Rico or North Africa it would be possible but in North Dakota?? I am sceptic. Genetic does not seem an exact science, different genetic studies often say different things.

midori29 August 19, 2018 at 9:48 am

@cwm85 People don’t call themselves African American unless a huge significant majority of thier DNA is African

fuzzybear44 August 19, 2018 at 12:52 pm

I have to disagree with you a little bit. there are actually whites ,who come from South Africa and various other places in Africa who identify as African Americans. They even had the nerve to go out to African-American scholarships

andrew August 20, 2018 at 3:49 am

I remember Chris Rock calling Charlize Theron “African-American” on SNL

passingtime85 August 19, 2018 at 11:18 pm

Not true always. Benjamin Jealous the former president and CEO of the NAACP is mostly European genetically but is still considered “black”.

fuzzybear44 August 20, 2018 at 8:37 am

Yeah I remember that , but she doesn’t call herself African American

cwm85 December 17, 2015 at 12:58 pm

Johnny is African American and native also… he obviously is more than African decent. Over years it has been rumored of native ancestry.
