Depp is the star of the films, Pirates of the Caribbean, Public Enemies and Edward Scissor Hands. In an interview he stated that his great grandmother has a lot of Cherokee heritage. (3)
From an interview in 2002 he stated that he was a mixture of German, Irish and Cherokee among other things.(2) There are some rumors on the internet that Depp also has Lebanese heritage, though this is not confirmed.
Some of Depp’s biographies state that his family name Depp is of French origin, derived from the names Pierre Deppe or Dieppe. He jokingly says that his surname means “idiot” in German.
The link below (1) shows a family tree on Depp’s father’s side that leads right up to his grandfather Oren Laramore Depp. If you go back 9 generations on this family tree it will lead to a woman named Martha, born in 1612, who was a woman of African descent.
An interesting piece of trivia is that Martha’s daughter, Elizabeth Key was the first woman of African ancestry to successfully take legal action to free herself from slavery. This happened in 1656. (4)

To Lauren,
I did do my research,that why I said it.Next there has always been mixed blooded people in Europe.That place was full of black people,either slave or free who mixed with white people.Also those same peoples children married white people ,who came over here looking for new opportunities.Before the 1600′s there was no racism like that.It wasn’t until white men got upset that white women were choosing black men to marry or just being with,that everything change.They pass laws that didn’t work etc.Now those children turned around and married white people.Then you have the creoles who because of Placage,have produce many white children,who lived their lives as white and married white.Also according to Molecular anthropologist Mark D. Shriver who heads a group of nine population researchers at Penn State University;states that 30% of the white population has black lineage.I could go on with this,let me give examples:

People are all filled with a variety of ethnicity. It ranges from a little 2 a lot. This dude can act. I love the classic movie, BLOW, where he plays George Jung, a young and dashing drug dealer. If you haven’t seen this movie, I highly recommend it. It makes u wonna go out and make some money!

Actually Lauren, You are absolutely wrong. There were plenty of mixed Europeans prior to US Colonization…You need to do research. Have you ever heard of the Moors? Why do you think so many Southern Europeans are so dark? Why is much of Eastern Europe Muslim? Its because of the Moors (who were Berber, Black African, and Arab) and their involvement in Europe over several centuries. Maybe instead of being bitter about having African blood, you should just embrace yourself for who you are. Educate yourself before you try to school anyone else.

virginians were a mix of 17cent indentures. laws got around to expelling “free blacks” (slaves born of european moms and angolan or powhatan father’s), many settled virginia’s new territories, ie: kentucky… taking their slave music and culture with them. their unlucky 1st cousins born of noneuropean mothers, remained enslaved… both isolated groups continued to are a related ethnic group: the enslaved more african. today the mountain folk are known as melegeon and passed as white for generations… post slavery, their black cousins began to intermarry with more african, u.s. blacks. yet black or white descends of the first virginians are related through phenotype, culture, virginian origins… the timberlakes, presley’s, cloonies, jeffersons, washingons… btw: you 2nd and 3rd generation ‘americans’ and your eugenics based “race” would do well to study culture and blood ties.
