John Sparrow David Thompson was a Canadian lawyer, judge, university professor, and politician. A member of the Conservative Party, he served as the fourth Prime Minister of Canada, from December 5, 1892 until December 12, 1894, when he died in office. He was Premier of Nova Scotia, from May 25, 1882 to July 18, 1882, and a Member of Parliament for Antigonish (NS), from October 16, 1885 to December 12, 1894.

Prime Minister Thompson was the son of Charlotte (Pottinger) and John Sparrow Thompson. His father was a Methodist emigrant, from Waterford, Ireland. His mother was Scottish, from Orkney. He was married to Annie (Affleck) Thompson, with whom he had nine children.

Prime Minister Thompson was the first Roman Catholic to serve as Prime Minister of Canada.
