John Hickenlooper is an American politician, businessperson, and geologist. A member of the Democratic Party, he has served as a U.S. Senator from Colorado, since January 3, 2021. He has also been Mayor of Denver, from July 21, 2003 to January 11, 2011, Governor of Colorado, from January 11, 2011 to January 8, 2019, and Chair of the National Governors Association, from July 13, 2014 to July 25, 2015.

He was a candidate for the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 2020.

John is the son of Anne Doughten (Morris) and John Wright Hickenlooper. His cousin was documentary filmmaker George Hickenlooper, and he is also a third cousin, once removed, of pianist, music critic, and teacher Olga Samaroff (born Lucy Mary Olga Agnes Hickenlooper), and Republican politician Bourke B. Hickenlooper, who was Governor of Iowa, from 1943 to 1945, and a U.S. Senator from Iowa, from 1945 to 1969.

John is married to Robin Pringle. He has a son with his former wife, author and journalist Helen Thorpe.

John’s patrilineal line traces back to his great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather, Hans Georg Heckenlaible, who was born, c. 1698, in Rems-Murr-Kreis, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, and to his wife Sara Geiger.

John’s paternal grandfather was Smith Hickenlooper (the son of Andrew Hickenlooper and Maria Lloyd Smith). John’s grandfather Smith was born in Ohio, and was a judge on the Superior Court of Cincinnati, Ohio, from 1918 to 1923. John’s great-grandfather Andrew Hickenlooper was a civil engineer, politician, industrialist, and Union Army lieutenant colonel. He was the son of Andrew Heckenlooper and Abigail Cox. John’s great-grandmother Maria was the daughter of Adolphus Harry Smith and Sarah E. Bates.

John’s paternal grandmother was Annie/Anna/Ann Bailey/Baily Wright (the daughter of John Gordon Reynolds Wright and Cecelia/Celia L. Doughty). Annie was born in Indiana. John was the son of John Reynolds Wright and Mary Elizabeth Smith. Cecelia was the daughter of George Edward Doughty and Louisa Fingland.

John’s maternal grandfather was Sydney Sharp Morris (the son of William Paul Morris and Mary Bunting Sharp). Sydney was born in Pennsylvania. William was the son of Theodore Hollingsworth Morris and Mary Lownes Paul. John’s great-grandmother Mary was the daughter of Joseph Webster Sharp and Sidney Serrill/Serril Bunting.

John’s maternal grandmother was Helen Stokes Doughten (the daughter of Henry Warrington Doughten and Anna D. Doughten). Helen was born in New Jersey. Henry was the son of George F. Doughten and Susan Assheton Stokes. Anna was the daughter of William Simpson Doughten and Abigail Rowand Clement.
