John Forbes Nash, Jr. was an American mathematician. He made key contributions to game theory, real algebraic geometry, differential geometry, and partial differential equations. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 1994, with John Harsanyi and Reinhard Selten; and the Abel Prize in 2015, with Louis Nirenberg. His life was depicted in the film A Beautiful Mind, with Russell Crowe.

He was the son of Margaret Virginia (Martin), a schoolteacher, and John Forbes Nash, Sr., an electrical engineer, for the Appalachian Electric Power Company. He was married to Alicia Ester Lardé y López Harrison, who was born in El Salvador, until their accidental deaths. The two had divorced and re-married each other. He had a son with his former partner, nurse Eleanor Stier; and a son with Alicia.

John’s paternal grandfather was Alexander Quincy “Allie” Nash (the son of Jesse Gent/Ghent Nash and Mary Louisa/Louise Marsh). Alexander was born in Mississippi. His parents founded Mary Nash College in Sherman, Texas. Jesse was the son of George Nash and Elizabeth Ghent. Mary Louisa was the daughter of Moses Cushman Marsh and Betsy/Betsey Forbush.

John’s paternal grandmother was Martha A. “Mattie” Smith (the daughter of John Calvin Smith and Nancy Clark Dupree/Deupree). Martha was born in Texas. John was the son of Nathan Alexander Smith and Martha Amonette. Nancy was the daughter of Daniel Louis Dupree/Deupree and Francina Bouldin/Boling/Bolling Cox.

John’s maternal grandfather was James Everett Martin (the son of Augustus Harrison/Gus Martin and Susan Virginia Corpening). James was born in North Carolina. Augustus was the son of James Martin and Elvira Bryan, whose father was from County Armagh, Northern Ireland. Susan was the daughter of David Corpening and Mary Elvira Perkins.

John’s maternal grandmother was Emma Virginia “Eva” Baker (the daughter of John Baker and Delilah Eller). Emma was born in North Carolina. John was the son of Zachariah Baker and Zilphia Dickson. Delilah was the daughter of Luke Eller and Sarah “Sallie” King.
