Jean Chrétien is a Canadian statesman and politician. A member of the Liberal Party of Canada, he served as the twentieth Prime Minister of Canada, from November 4, 1993 to December 12, 2003. He was also the 2nd Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, from July 5, 1968 to August 7, 1974, the 3rd President of the Treasury Board, from August 8, 1974 to September 13, 1976, the 2nd Deputy Prime Minister of Canada, from June 30, 1984 to September 17, 1984, and Leader of the Opposition in the Canadian Parliament, from December 21, 1990 to November 4, 1993, among many portfolios. He was an MP from Québec, from April 8, 1963 to February 27, 1986, from New Brunswick, from December 10, 1990 to October 25, 1993, and from Québec again, from October 25, 1993 to December 12, 2003.

Prime Minister Chrétien is the son of Willie Chrétien and Marie Boisvert. He was married to secretary, payroll manager, model, and pianist Aline (Chaîné), until her death, with whom he has three children.

Prime Minister Chrétien’s paternal grandfather was François Chrétien, Jr. (the son of François Chrétien, Sr. and Elizabeth/Elisabeth Blais/Blaise). Prime Minister Chrétien’s grandfather François was born in Maskinongé, Québec. Prime Minister Chrétien’s great-grandfather François was the son of François-Régis Chrétien and Marie-Louise Marcotte. Elizabeth was the daughter of Joseph Blais/Blaise and Marie Boisvert.

Prime Minister Chrétien’s paternal grandmother was Olivine Laforme (the daughter of Godfroi/Godefroy Laforme and Aurélie Garceau). Godfroi was the son of François Laforme dit Perron and Judith-Angélique Lemay dit Poudrier. Aurélie was the daughter of François Charles Garceau and Charlotte Boisvert.

Prime Minister Chrétien’s maternal grandfather was Philippe Boisvert (the son of Pierre Boisvert and Philomène Bourassa). Pierre was the son of Joseph Boisvert dit Denevers and Marguerite Corriveau. Philomène was the daughter of Frédéric Bourassa and Julie St. Pierre. Julie’s mother, Hannah England, was of English or part English descent.

Prime Minister Chrétien’s maternal grandmother was Agnès Gélinas (the daughter of Antoine Gélinas, Jr. and Elzire Gélinas). Agnès was born in Yamachiche. Antoine and Elzire were both born with the same surname. Antoine was the son of Antoine Gélinas and Josephte Lamy. Elzire was the daughter of François Gélinas and Amélie/Emelie Lavergne.
