James Iredell was Attorney General of North Carolina, from July 8, 1779 to April 22, 1782, and an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, from May 12, 1790 to October 20, 1799.

He was a Federalist Party candidate for President of the United States in 1796.

Justice Iredell was born in Lewes, England, the son of Margaret (MucCulloh) and Francis Iredell, a merchant. His father was from Bristol, England. His mother was from Ireland. He moved to the Colonies in 1767, living in North Carolina.

Justice Iredell was married to Hannah Johnston, with whom he had four children.
