Islam Karimov was the first President of Uzbekistan, from 1 September, 1991 to 2 September, 2016, his death. He was previously First Secretary of the Communist Party of Uzbekistan, from 23 June, 1989 to 29 December, 1991, and President of the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic, from 24 March, 1990 to 1 September, 1991.

His father, Abdugani Karimov, was Uzbek. His mother, Sanobar (maiden surname unknown) Karimova, was Tajik. He was married to Natalya Petrovna Kuchmi and Tatyana Akbarovna.
