Helen Slater is an American actress, singer, and songwriter. She starred as Supergirl in the same named 1984 film, the first major female superhero movie. Her roles also include the films The Legend of Billie Jean, Ruthless People, The Secret of My Success, and City Slickers, and the shows Smallville and Supergirl (2015), not as the title character; and, in voice performance, Batman: The Animated Series and DC Super Hero Girls: Hero of the Year.

She is the daughter of Alice (Citrin), a lawyer and nuclear disarmament peace activist, and Gerald Slater, a television executive and producer. Her father was one of the four founding employees of PBS. Her parents were/are both Jewish. Her father’s family’s surname was originally Schlachter.

Helen is married to actor and director Robert Watzke, with whom she has a daughter.

Helen’s paternal grandfather was named William Herbert Slater. William was born in Poland.

Helen’s paternal grandfather was named Jean Tiger (who likely was the daughter of Max Tiger and Bessie). Jean was born in New York.

    I’m assuming she’s Polish Jewish and Russian Jewish. Those seem to be the most common ancestries among Jewish Americans.

    CITRIN‐Solomon, of Century Village, Golf’s Edge, W. Palm Beach, Fla., beloved husband of Sylvia and devoted father of Alice and Martha, loving grandfather of David, Helen, Andrew and Beth

    If so, it would make her maternal grandparents Solomon Citrin (son of Sam/Shaye Citrin/Lemon and Rose) and Sylvia Friedman.
