Derek Jeter is an American professional baseball player. A shortstop, he played 20 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the New York Yankees.

Derek is the son of Dorothy (Connors) and Sanderson Charles Jeter. His father is African-American, and also has some English, and remote Native American, ancestry. Derek’s mother has Irish, and smaller amounts of German and English, ancestry.

Derek is married to model Hannah Jeter (born Hannah Davis), with whom he has four children.

A DNA test whose results were displayed on the show Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. (2014) stated that Derek’s genetic ancestry is:

Derek’s paternal grandmother was Lugenia Jeter (the daughter of Bustee Jeter and Minnie Palmore). Lugenia was born in Alabama. Bustee was the son of Green W. Jeter and Jane. Green was a Christian minister. He was the son of a white slave owner, James Williamson Jeter, and of a black slave woman, Charity Jeter.

Derek’s maternal grandfather was named William Francis Connors (the son of Mary). William was born in New Jersey.

Derek’s maternal grandmother was Dorothy Tiedemann (the daughter of Thomas Augustine Tiedemann and Agnes Melvin). Dorothy was born in New Jersey. Thomas was the son of Michael Patrick Tiedemann and Frances Cecilia Pierce. Frances’ father, William Charles Pierce, was English, from Manchester.

douglas murphy you are an ignorant racist person who is the reason that there can be no racial harmony your anti-white and elitist attitude that everyone is black and black rules all sickens me and you are the very reason that there is no unity and i pray you don’t have children you bigoted close-minded black pantered mentality hate-monger!

Black people did not make up this rule. It was on the books thats a black person despite color or racial mixture was black. It was on the books, legally, that anyone mixed with black was black – the one drop rule. And any person mixed with black had to sit in the back of the bus during Jim Crow etc. Blacks who lived through Jim Crow hold this vision because tehy are so used to their lives being in danger if they do not. They are not the hatemongers, the lawmen who enforced this rule were. And to be fair, many White people still hold this view. Look at the response to Obama – people call him the N word etc. They see him as an other. So before attacking a black person, understand that they were following the law of the land and only in the past 30 years or so – if that – did the law change. The one drop rule. People of color could lose their lives if they challenged it. So when you meet a 60 year old black person who thinks this way, remember how much danger they would have been in if they didn’t.

        That’s right

…Past 30 years? Really? …Don’t you think you need to add a few more years to that figure? That rule died out much longer. Unfortunately, it lives in the minds of people who haven’t figured out that it is a new day…I realize that change takes a while for many people to grasp…it’s sad.

  2. Douglas Murphy says:

It is a general known fact that any person mixed with african american blood is generally considered as black or african american person. Now what is all the fuss about. As far as I am concerned, all people are human beings with shades of black

    • Tess says:

Technically yes because all people came from Africa. I suppose one could say that although there is some new evidence that separate life sprung up at the same time in other regions but in general, the first signs of human life were in Africa so technically we are all of African descent.

I tend to agree with CoolCat, another example is Jason Kidd. He is half Irish and Black and looks more on the white side. Jennifer Beals is another irish black person who looks just white.

  4. janille says:

Yeah well I know he was mixed and I knew that he was black I just didn’t know what he was mixed with!

  5. coolcat says:
