Denise is the daughter of Patricia M. (McNeil) and jazz pianist Gene DiNovi (born Eugene Salvatore DiNovi). Denise was raised in Los Angeles, California, and Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Denise’s paternal grandfather was Antonio/Anthony DiNovi (the son of Vito DiNovi and Teresa Leonardo). Antonio was born in Italy.

Denise’s paternal grandmother was Filomena/Philomena M. Pechio/Pecchio (the daughter of Carmine Pechio/Pecchio and Maria Fusco). Filomena was born in New York, to parents from Italy.
