Denis Hayes is an American environmental advocate and an advocate for solar power. He was the coordinator for the first Earth Day in 1970.

He is the son of Christenie Antoinette and Archibald John “Archie” Hayes. He was mostly raised in Camas, Washington. Denis is married to Gail Boyer, with whom he has a daughter. Gail is the daughter of biochemist, analytical chemist, and professor of chemistry Paul D. Boyer.

Denis’s paternal grandfather was Thomas F. Hayes (the son of William Hayes and Ann Egan). Thomas was born in Wisconsin, to Irish parents.

Denis’s paternal grandmother Mary Bridget Fitzgerald (the daughter of Edmund/Edmond Fitzgerald and Ellen Sorrell). Mary was born in Wisconsin, to Irish parents. Ellen was born in County Cork.
