DeForest Kelley was an American actor, screenwriter, poet, and singer. He is known for his role as Dr. McCoy in the Star Trek franchise.

DeForest was the son of Clora S. (Casey) and The Rev. Ernest David Kelley. His father was a Baptist minister. He was named after pioneering electronics engineer Lee de Forest. He was married to Carolyn Dowling, until his death.

DeForest’s paternal grandfather was Emory Franklin/Jackson Kelley (the son of Owen Kelley and Harriet/Harriett Guest). Emory was born in Georgia. Owen possibly was the son of William Kelley and Elizabeth Ann Singleton. Harriet was the daughter of Colbert Cobb Guest and Elizabeth Bethel.

DeForest’s paternal grandmother was Mary Emily Payne (the daughter of John Epps Payne and Lory Emily Shackleford). Mary was born in Georgia. John was the son of David Henslee Payne and Mary Ann “Polly” Chatham. Lory was the daughter of William Shackleford and Sarah Mariah Rogers.

DeForest’s maternal grandfather was James T. Casey (the son of Andrew Jackson Casey and Cynthia). James was born in South Carolina. Andrew was the son of Randolph Casey and Mary.

DeForest’s maternal grandmother was named Martha Lula Cook. Martha was born in South Carolina or North Carolina.
