Danilo Medina is a Dominican politician. He was President of the Dominican Republic, from 16 August, 2012 to 16 August, 2020. He was also President of the Chamber of Deputies, from 16 August, 1994 to 16 August, 1995, and President pro tempore of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, from 28 January, 2016 to 26 January, 2017.

He is the son of Juan Pablo Medina de los Santos and Amelia Sánchez Abréu. He is married to clinical psychologist Cándida Montilla Espinal, with whom he has three children.

Danilo’s patrilineal ancestry can be traced back to his eighth great-grandfather, Alonso de Medina, of Seville, Spain.

Danilo’s paternal grandfather was José María Medina Báez (the son of Gaspar Medina Báez and Ana Joaquina Báez Tejeda). José was from urban Baní. Gaspar was the son of Juan Pablo Medina Báez and María Josefa Báez del Villar. Ana Joaquina was the daughter of Cristóbal Báez del Villar and María del Socorro Tejeda Peña.

Danilo’s paternal grandmother was named Lucía Blasina de los Santos.

Danilo’s maternal grandfather was Isael Sánchez de León (the son of Gabriel Sánchez de León and Faustina de León). Gabriel was the son of Pedro Sánchez Romero and Bumba de León.

Danilo’s maternal grandmother was Ana Rita “Anita” Abréu Sánchez (the daughter of Buenaventura Abréu and Ana Teresa Sánchez Veloz). Ana Teresa was the daughter of Matías Sánchez Romero and Carmita Veloz.
