Clay Matthews III is an American football player. He is a linebacker.

Clay is the son of Leslie and William Clay Matthews, Jr., a professional football player. His brother is linebacker Casey Matthews. His uncle is Bruce Matthews and his cousins are Kevin Matthews, Jake Matthews, and Mike Matthews, all of whom are professional football players.

Clay is married and has three children.

Clay’s paternal grandfather was Clay Matthews, Sr., a professional football player (born William Clay Matthews, the son of Howard Lynn Matthews and Elsa Wilhelmina Bargmann). Howard was the son of George Washington Matthews and Maxie Jean Rankin. Elsa was born in South Carolina, to German parents, William John Bargmann and Catherine Elsa Tiedemann.

Clay’s paternal grandmother was Daisy Ezelle Crowson (the daughter of Thomas Walter Crowson and Daisy Ezelle Lilly). Thomas was the son of Thomas Seigic Crowson and Nannie Rebecca Gulledge. Clay’s great-grandmother Daisy was the daughter of Frederick Lilly and Roxanna Goodwin.
