Chris Hemsworth
Place of Birth: Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Date of Birth: 11 August, 1983
Ethnicity: Dutch (maternal grandfather), Irish, English, as well as 1/16th German and 1/16th Scottish
Chris Hemsworth is an Australian actor. His roles include Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe/The Avengers, the films Star Trek (2009), A Perfect Getaway, Ca$h, The Cabin in the Woods, Snow White and the Huntsman, Red Dawn, Rush (2013), Blackhat, Vacation (2015), In the Heart of the Sea, the sequel The Huntsman: Winter’s War, Ghostbusters (2016), 12 Strong, Bad Times at the El Royale, Men in Black: International, Extraction, and Spiderhead, and the series Neighbours, Home and Away, and Limitless with Chris Hemsworth. Though he has had roles on Australian television, he has never starred in an Australian film.
Chris is the son of Leonie, a teacher of English, and Craig Hemsworth, a social services counselor. He was partly raised on Phillip Island, southeast of Melbourne. He is the brother of actors Luke Hemsworth and Liam Hemsworth. He is married to Spanish actress Elsa Pataky, with whom he has three children.
Chris’s maternal grandfather was a Dutch immigrant. The rest of Chris’s ancestry is approximately 11/32 English, 9/32 Irish, 1/16th German, and 1/16th Scottish.
Chris’s uncle, by marriage, was bushman Rod Ansell, who inspired the character “Crocodile” Dundee. Rod was married to Chris’s aunt (Chris’s mother’s sister), Joanne van Os, an author.
Chris was selected People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” in 2014. He is the second Australian-born man (Hugh Jackman, in 2008, is the first), and, thus far, the only man of significant Dutch heritage, to have been given this title by the magazine (although Patrick Swayze, the 1991 title recipient, may have had a Dutch great-grandfather).
Chris’s patrilineal ancestry can be traced to John Hemsworth, who was born, c. 1804, in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England.
Chris’s paternal grandfather was Keith Hemsworth (the son of William Hamilton Hemsworth and Frances Margaret Jobson). William was born in Footscray, Victoria, Australia, the son of John Richard Hemsworth, who was of English descent, and of Carroline/Caroline Sophie Fahle, who was the daughter of German emigrants, Heinrich Conrad Fahle, from Minden, Westphalia, then belonging to Prussia, and Carroline/Caroline Schwer, from Hannover. Chris’s great-grandmother Frances was the daughter of John/Jack Jobson, who was of English and Scottish descent, and of Janet Bibby; Janet’s father, Thomas John Bibby, was born in Argyle, Scotland, and Janet’s mother, Ann/Anne/Annie McKeown/McEwan, was born in Dublin, Ireland.
Chris’s paternal grandmother was Gladys Priscilla Outen (the daughter of Charles Whynam Outen and Priscilla Louise Dainton). Charles had English and Irish ancestry, and was the son of Charles George Outen and Bridget Cross. Chris’s great-grandmother Priscilla was the daughter of James Henry Dainton, who was born in Clifton, Gloucestershire, England, and of Elizabeth Victoria Parker, who was born in Devon, England.
Chris’s maternal grandfather is Martin van Os (the son of Johannes Has Van Os and Petronella Nel Verhoeven). Martin is a Dutch immigrant. Johannes was born in Veghel, Noord-Brabant, the son of Petrus Johannus Van Os and Theodora Van Der Heijden. Petronella was born in Vorstenbosch, Bernheze, Noord-Brabant, the daughter of Everardus Martinus Verhoeven and Maria Van Der Sanden.
Chris’s maternal grandmother was Rosemarie Therese O’Sullivan (the daughter of Thomas Augustus O’Sullivan and Mary Christina Denham). Thomas was the son of Irish parents, Daniel O’Sullivan, from Kerry, and Catherine Flynn, from Tipperary. Mary Christina was the daughter of Henry Albert Denham, who was English, from Somerset, and of Margaret Catherine O’Neill, who was of Irish origin; Margaret was the daughter of Samuel O’Neill and Mary Alicia Bryce.

Most Australians seem to have blue eyes – it shows that they have Irish ancestry.
Not really.
It seems like most Irish people (at least the celebs) have darker eyes – Ryan Reynolds, Matt Dillon, Jimmy Fallon, George Clooney, etc and etc.
Hemsworth is a very English looking man. Very Anglo-Saxon. Or should I say, a typical Anglo Aussie. He does look Slavic too.
Most Irish people as in Ireland are blue eyed. The people you mention are all Americans of mixed ancestry.
Most Australians are of mixed ancestry just like Chris Hemsworth and Anglo-Saxon is a very outdated term. Even most English aren’t of majority Anglo-Saxon ancestry.
Are they really mixed? Because I only see “Irish” and “English” under their ancestry.
Do you think they don’t mention their “darker” roots?
I mean, I have always suspected Clooney, Connery and Reynolds to have South European heritage.
What darker roots? Just because someone has brown eyes and dark hair doesn’t mean they have Southern European ancestry. Sean Connery just has Irish and Scottish ancestry. All European populations have people with dominant and recessive characteristics. Brown eyes are dominant to blue but in some populations there is a higher proportion of people with blue eyes for example. The Irish are a population with a higher percentage of blue eyes. But just because someone has brown eyes it doesn’t mean they don’t have the same ancestry as the rest of the population.
Most Australians have British Isles ancestry that is British and Irish ancestry. Quite a few have other European ancestry like Dutch and Italian. Chris Hemsworth has majority British Isles ancestry with some German.
In a way because it would be very unusual to get an Australian with ancestry from only one country. Clooney has quite a varied ancestry but I don’t think he has any Southern European. I also don’t get why if someone has brown eyes and dark hair people automatically think they have Southern European ancestry. That comes across as quite simplistic thinking and it just boggles my mind. As if no Irish or British person could have brown eyes and dark hair. There are Scandinavians, Germans, Finns with brown eyes and dark hair without any recent outside ancestry. If people think there are only blue eyed blonds in one area and brown eyed brunets in another they haven’t looked into the subject to any great degree and they obviously haven’t traveled much.
No, he doesn’t look English – he’s Irish all day long. Here’s an Irishman from Galway, Joe Canning, the Hurler.

gel,
You’re not in anyway biased, are you? There are lots of Blonde people in both countries — he looks like he could be English or Irish.
Here are some English Rugby players:

England rugby team looks a lot like like Chris Hemsworth, I know,
Probably of Irish background, anyway. Farrell is.
Don’t talk about bias with your red hair nonsense.
I’m sure Farrell has some Irish. Lots of English people have …some… Irish ancestry. Just like lots of Irish born people have ancestors that came from, England, Scotland, Wales, etc..
All those Britons probably brought all that lovely Blonde hair with them….
do you know Owen’s dad, Andy Farrell?

This ‘gel’ is just a troll.
Irish are definately darker than the English. Atleast East English. Black irish didn’t come from nowhere lol. Irish people are very pale but they tend to have darker hair and features. I can always tell apart the the English australians from the irish ones. Looks like this Ryan Corr’s are typical of irish and welsh australians but not so common for english australians.

Black Irish is actually an American term and isn’t used in Ireland. The Irish are not significantly darker than the English and do in fact have a higher percentage of blue eyes. You can’t just pick a couple of people to use as an example of what a whole population looks like.

“Definitely darker than the English”? Need your eyes testing – difficult to get darker than these typical Englishmen:

Correction: Heinrich Fahle (from Minden, Lower Saxony; then belonging to Prussia) and Caroline Schwer (from Hannover)
Correction: Minden is in Westphalia, not in Lower Saxony. My mistaker, sorry!
mistake …
… and already corrected. Thank you! You are the best! :-)
A problem I often see at ethnicelebs is the localization of German towns within the political chaos in German history. Especially with “Prussia”, as the Prussians incorporated large parts of non-Prussian Germany into their Kingdom. But that doesn’t make the people Prussians.
Political-geographically, Minden is a town in Westphalia, not in Prussia, which is about 500 km to the east of Westphalia (okay, that’s no distance for an American … :D ); politically, Westphalia has been a province of Prussia from 1815 to the founding of the Kingdom of Germany 1871; obviously the time Hemsworth’s mentioned German ancestor was born; today, it’s a part of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Ethnically, the people of Westphalia are from the Saxon tribe like the Lower-Saxons; they both have still the same heraldic symbol, the white horse as symbol of the Saxons who invaded Britain in the 6th century. While the Prussians have Slavic origin and merged with Germanic tribes when they migrated to what we call today Prussia.
It’s a bit as if you call a Scotsman an Englishman … ;-)
The better looking brother-even though they are both very attractive.
