Chip is the son of Doris Winifred (Woehrlin) and George Hans Johannessen. Chip is married to Virginia Stock, with whom he has a child.

Chip’s father was born in Harstad, Troms County, Norway, and moved to Michigan with his family at the age of two. Chip’s mother was born in New York, and had German ancestry.

Chip’s paternal grandparents were Elmer Johannessen/Johannesson and Emma.
