Thanks for the info, bablah.

Therefore, Carlson’s great-great-grandparents (through her maternal grandmother), Carl Gustav and Elizabeth A. Johnson, were both Swedish, making her 1/8 Swedish.

Also, three of her great-great-great-grandparents (through her maternal grandfather) were from Ireland, making her 3/32 Irish.

Actually, Carlson is 2/16 (1/8) Swedish and 3/32 Irish all through her maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Ann Root.

@stlucas

Some of her Canadian ancestors have Irish background too. Only French ancetry remains unconfirmed, but it’s probably from her Canadian side too.

The remaining 1/32 might be Irish as well. The ancestor was from Quebec, though “Root” points toward British Isles ancestry, rather than French-Canadian.

To sum up:
Harold was the son of Nelson Henry Root, who was born in Massachusetts to a Canadian father, from Montreal, and an Irish mother, and Johanna J. McCrohin, whose parents were Irish.

Marshall was the son of George Andrew Young, who was born in Canada, to an Irish father and a Canadian mother and Helen Jane Outzan, whose father was Danish. Margaret was the daughter of William Carroll Kelly, whose parents were Irish, and Lena Bondurant McAdams.

The 1900 and 1910 U.S. Censuses lists Helen’s father as born in “Prussia” and “Germany” respectively, but the 1880 Census (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MNH8-1ZM) and the marriage record (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XRK8-5RT) says he was Danish. I don’t know what to make of it, but “Outzen” appears to be a Danish surname, so that’s what I assumed.

Carlson was actually born “Carlos Elizabeth Young”.

Carlson’s paternal grandmother was Diane Decell.

So she’s likely 1/32 Danish (or German) and at very least 1/8 Irish.

Her grandmother’s “Decell” surname might be French.

She is closer to one quarter Irish, probably more than that.

I also thought she might have French ancestry through her paternal grandmother. Especially “Decelle” appears to be French.

Also, Ruth was the daughter of Thomas E. Dwyer, who was of Irish descent, and Ruth Mae/May B. Johnson.

Prussia under Bismarck conquered parts of southern Denmark.

“Carlos” is probably a typo. I’m sure Young was named “Carlson” after her maternal great-grandmother’s maiden surname, as is sometimes Southern tradition.

stlucas January 28, 2017 at 4:47 pm

Could you change her ethnicity to 1/8 Swedish?

stlucas January 11, 2017 at 7:02 pm

She has stated that she also has Irish, French, and Swedish ancestry.
