Bill Clinton is an American politician. A Democrat, he served as the President of the United States, January 20, 1993 to January 20, 2001. He was elected to the position in 1992 and 1996. He was previously the 50th Attorney General of Arkansas, from January 3, 1977 to January 9, 1979, and Governor of Arkansas, from January 9, 1979 to January 19, 1981, and again from January 11, 1983 to December 12, 1992. His wife is politician Hillary Clinton. Their daughter is Chelsea Clinton.

He was Time Magazine’s Person of the Year for 1992, and for 1998 (sharing the latter award with Ken Starr).

President Clinton was born William Jefferson Blythe III, the son of Virginia Clinton Kelley (born Virginia Dell Cassidy), a nurse anesthetist, and William Jefferson Blythe, Jr. He took on the surname of his stepfather, Roger M. Clinton. President Clinton’s ancestry includes English, as well as Scots-Irish (Northern Irish), Irish, German, Swiss-German, Scottish, and distant French Huguenot. Many of his ancestors had lived in the United States, specifically in the American South, for many generations.

President Clinton’s paternal grandfather was William Jefferson Blythe (the son of Henry Patton Foote Blythe and Frances Ellen “Fannie” Hines). President Clinton’s grandfather William was born in Mississippi. Henry was the son of Thomas Jefferson Blythe and Esther Elvira Baum. Frances was the daughter of John Francis Hines and Eliza Ellen Emily Lockhart.

President Clinton’s paternal grandmother was Lou Birchie Ayers (the daughter of Simpson Green “Dick” Ayers and Hattie Hayes). Lou was born in Mississippi. Simpson was the son of Asa Ayres, who was born in Ireland, and of Olivia/Olive Vessells. Hattie was possibly the daughter of William Andrew Hayes and Elizabeth Carolin.

President Clinton’s maternal grandfather was James Eldridge Cassidy (the son of James Monroe Cassidy and Sarah/Sara Louisa Russell). President Clinton’s grandfather James was born in Arkansas. President Clinton’s great-grandfather James was the son of George Washington Cassidy/Cassady and Nancy Ann Josephine Snelgrove. Sarah was the daughter of William James Russell and Mary Elizabeth Spradley.

President Clinton’s maternal grandmother was Edith Valeria/Vallie Grisham (the daughter of Lemma/Lemar Newell Grisham and Edna Earl Adams). Edith was born in Arkansas. Lemma was the son of James B. Gresham/Grisham and Hattie Rebecca Mitchell. Edna was the daughter of Martin Franklin Adams and Sarah Jane May.

President Clinton has evidently stated that one of his great-great-grandparents was a Cherokee Native American. No Native American ancestry, Cherokee or otherwise, has been documented/verified for President Clinton by genealogists.

Along with Bill Clinton claiming to be of Native American ancestry mind mentioning all the internet claims of president Clinton being a Rothschild and how that is inaccurate and he has no documented Jewish ancestry. I think that will stop all the internet rumors. Thanks

Sorta random are Bill Clinton and Barack Obama the only presidents who claimed Native American ancestry?

follers September 5, 2015 at 4:28 am

Did Bill Clinton ever claim Native American ancestry?

bearboy September 5, 2015 at 7:16 am

In your profile of him it said he specifically claimed Cherokee heritage?

BTW I have been searching the Reagan tree on Our 40th president’s mother’s side goes back thousands of years. Couldn’t find a Jewish ancestor in the 800’s, could you?

There are NO “Scots-Irish”. Made up.

phaedra April 16, 2016 at 9:41 pm

Exactly. So sick of that term.

English and Scottish-Irish makes sense. Maybe me and him are distant relatives. I am part Scottish, possibly Irish. My surname is McDonald.

He was also part French Huguenot, through a 18-th century ancestress of his, Mary E. Lemaster (wife of Jacob Langston):

According to under Romani Gypsy Notables they believe president Bill Clinton might be part Gypsy as well.

follers January 23, 2015 at 4:44 pm

Which of President Clinton’s ancestors was said to be of Romani descent?

andrew January 23, 2015 at 5:08 pm

guyinsf August 11, 2015 at 9:02 pm

Michael Caine is said to have Romani heritage too.

bearboy December 19, 2014 at 7:24 pm

It should be added to the profile that he claimed to be part Cherokee because it might be accurate

I found a fact from that people living in the U.S. before 1800 have a 50% of having a Native American ancestor.

Joeytwo2 March 21, 2014 at 8:36 pm

“CORRECTION’ many sources claim he is related to the Rothschild’s Jewish family's_family_tree.htm

follers March 21, 2014 at 9:03 pm

What is the name of President Clinton’s last Jewish ancestor? None of these fraudulent “sources” have any proof whatsoever that President Clinton has any Jewish ancestry.

Joeytwo2 March 21, 2014 at 9:31 pm

sorry about that didn’t look carefully at the source… random question what kind of surname is Baum though? His three times great grandfather was Moses Baum is that possibly a German surname?

follers March 21, 2014 at 9:50 pm

Yes, Moses Baum was probably of part German ancestry. He is generally believed to have been the son of Lemuel Baum and Sarah Diffee. I will add the German part.

Joeytwo2 March 21, 2014 at 10:01 pm

thanks for the link! Two more questions, a comment below ours claims he has Cherokee roots… that can’t be possible right? and second is Baum one of those names that could or could not be Jewish along with a German surname?

follers March 21, 2014 at 10:19 pm

I haven’t seen any proof of Cherokee ancestry. Baum can be a Jewish surname but mostly is not (i.e., author L. Frank Baum). Most German immigrants to the United States in the 1700s were not Jewish.

There are plenty books that detail the ancestry of USA presidents. Go to the library (preferably one of the more complete ones) and look to see if there is a well researched book on the USA commanders in cheif. Wikipedia is not a reliable resource.

If I remember correctly, as it has been many years, I think his forebears were English, Irish, English, Scots-Irish, German, French and Cherokee, or something to that effect, but not necessarily in that order.

All the USA presidents should be listed on this site once that source has been found (it’s in the reference section BTW)
