Benjamin Spock was an American pediatrician. He wrote The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care (1946), one of the best-selling books of all time. He was also an Olympic rower.

He was the People’s Party’s nominee for President of the United States, in 1972, and for Vice President of the United States, in 1976.

Benjamin was the son of Mildred Louise (Stoughton) and Benjamin Ives Spock. He had two children.

Benjamin’s paternal grandfather was William H. Spock (the son of Stephen Spock and Elizabeth Romer). William was born in New York. Stephen was the son of James Spock and Mary Ann Smith. Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry Romer and Mary Jennings.

Benjamin’s paternal grandmother was named Annie E. Sprague. Annie was born in New York, to English parents.

Benjamin’s maternal grandfather was Charles Bradley Stoughton (the son of Henry Evander Stoughton and Laura Elmina/Elmira Clark). Charles was born in Vermont. Henry was the son of Thomas Potwine Stoughton and Susan Bradley. Laura was the daughter of John Clark and Sarah Rice.

Benjamin’s maternal grandmother was Ada Ripley Hooper (the daughter of Robert Chamblet Hooper and Adeline/Adaline Denny Ripley). Ada was born in Massachusetts. Robert was the son of William Hooper and Mary Reed. Adeline was the daughter of James Wolf Ripley and Sarah W. Denny.
