Ben Chifley was an Australian politician. He served as Prime Minister of Australia, from 13 July, 1945 to 19 December, 1949. He was also Minister for Defence, from 3 March, 1931 to 6 January, 1932, Treasurer of Australia, from 7 October, 1941 to 18 December, 1949, Minister for Postwar Reconstruction, from 22 December, 1942 to 2 February, 1945, Leader of the Labor Party, from 13 July, 1945 to 13 June, 1951, and Leader of the Opposition, from 19 December, 1949 to 13 June, 1951, among other duties.

Prime Minister Chifley was the son of Mary Anne (Corrigan) and Patrick Joseph Chifley, a blacksmith. His father was born in Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia, to Irish parents. His mother was born in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.

Prime Minister Chifley’s paternal grandparents were Patrick Chifley (the son of Richard Chifley and Margaret “Peggy” Reneham) and Mary Dee (the daughter of William Dee and Johanna).

Prime Minister Chifley’s maternal grandparents were John Corrigan and Mary.
