In his book, Bautista states that his Filipino grandfather died in 1988 and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

    • transemacabre says:

The only entry at Arlington that could be his grandfather is that of Alfonso Velasco Bautista, 1912-1988, a Purple Heart recipient.

On his WW2 draft card (where his year of birth is given as 1911 instead of 1912) Alfonso is shown as being born in Narvacan Ilocos Sur, in the Philippines. His next of kin is Rosa Espina Bautista. They were naturalized in Florida and on that record his wife’s full name is Rosa Trinidad Espina Bautista.

In the 1940 census, they’re living with Rosa’s family in D.C. Her father is Paul N. Espina (Filipino) and her mother is Edna McDonough, a white woman. They married 10 Jun 1921 in D.C.

Looks like Edna married a second time as she died under the name Edna Salmon in 1991. Her father was Thomas McDonough and her mother Lily May Beach. Thomas was born in Virginia and was working as a bricklayer in 1920. He and Lily married on 27 Sep 1898 in Loudon, Virginia. Her parents are C. V. and Susannah Beach and his parents are W. W. and Mary J. McDonough according to their marriage record.
