rly if u wanna get technical everybodys black. everyone originated in africa but over time over the course of many generations people adapted to their climates which in turn changed their appearances creating”races”. just look at the traits that were inherited. most african americans have coarse hair (protection from the harsh african sun) asians slanted eyes (to protect from the particles and gases emitted by volcanoes) all animals adapt we are no different except for the fact that we let it hold us back

Trin, well said!

Also Christine, I agree about the “one drop of blackv makes you black” statement being stupid. I’m brown skinned, but I bajan, native american and black in me. I don’t think people should be ashamed of being mixed, even if its 2nd or 3rd generation. If you have features that aren’t typical of an african american maybe there is a reason. Like a few ppl said, most black people are mixed. I just found our recently and I’m proud. People would ask me what I’m mixed with or what am I, although my skin is brown. A lot of it has to do with my hair and high cheek bones. But why act like being mixed or appreciating the heritage is a bad thing?

Firstly, SHE said she IS Black. That should be good enough. I assume all of you are mad because her skin isn’t blue black. Well clearly you don’t know anything about African history or it’s diversity. There isn’t any black, white, asian, latino, or native look. Race doesn’t exist and the word “mixed” is stupid. Ethnic groups have been “mixing” since the beginning of time, this is nothing new. How far should you go back in order to call yourself mixed? Should we all call ourselves mixed? Race is a social construct, so likely “it” will be influenced by the society that you live in. Chances are she doesn’t know any ancestors who are not black (I’m not saying there weren’t any, but she might not know them). She actually said that she was bothered by people who wanted her to say she was mixed or be something else and that was at the start of her career, and all these years later….Get over it already.

Mixed people relate to black people because that is who accepts them as one of their own. White people dont think that way about mixed people. once again, the one drop rule. you got some black? oh well u sure aint white. have a look at taylor lautner’s page on here. everybody is like I knew he wasnt white! lol so what if he is mostly white but inherited “some ethnic features”? whites will not claim him! FYI mixed is when you have parents of different ethnicities. White people don’t say they’re mixed if a parent is one quarter black but black people must be denying who they are if they say they are not mixed…smh

Interesting comments from people. I think a lot of people in the music industry especially the top ten pop music industry is run by prominent African Americans so I guess its not hard for someone like Mariah, Cassie or Ashanti to relate closely to the African American people around them.
