Arthur Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created detective Sherlock Holmes. His stories about him are milestones in crime fiction. He is also known as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle or simply Conan Doyle.

Arthur was the son of Mary Josephine Elizabeth (Foley) and Charles Altamont/Altamount Doyle, an artist. His uncles were illustrators Richard Doyle and James William Edmund Doyle, and painter and draughtsman Henry Edward Doyle. His father was born in England, to Irish parents. His mother was born in Lismore, Waterford, County Waterford, and was of Irish and Ulster-Scots descent.

Arthur was married to Mary Louise, until her death, and to Jean Leckie, until his death. He had two children with Mary, and three children with Jean.

Arthur’s paternal grandfather was John Doyle (the son of James Doyle and Catherine Tynan). John was born in Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland, and was a political cartoonist, caricaturist, painter, and lithographer. James was the son of Richard Doyle.

Arthur’s paternal grandmother was named Marianna Conan (the daughter of James Conan). Marianna was from Dublin.

Arthur’s maternal grandfather was William Foley (the son of Thomas Foley and Hannah Lowe). William was born in Lismore, Waterford, Ireland.

Arthur’s maternal grandmother was Catherine Pack (the daughter of William Percy Pack and Catherine Scott). Arthur’s grandmother Catherine was a convert to Catholicism. She was born in Kilkenny, Ireland. William was the son of The Rev. Richard Pack and Mary Percy. Arthur’s great-grandmother Catherine was the daughter of Matthew Scott and Lady Anna Glancy.
