Anthony Perkins was an American actor, director, and singer. His roles include Psycho, and its sequels, as well as the films The Actress, Friendly Persuasion, Fear Strikes Out, On the Beach, Tall Story, Goodbye Again, Pretty Poison, Catch-22, Play It as It Lays, Murder on the Orient Express, Mahogany, and In the Deep Woods.

He was the son of Janet Esselstyn (Rane) and actor Osgood Perkins (James Ripley Osgood Perkins). He was married to actress, model, and photographer Berry Berenson, until his death. The couple had two children, actor and filmmaker Oz/Osgood Perkins and musician Elvis Perkins. Berry was the sister of actress and model Marisa Berenson.

Anthony died from AIDS-related pneumonia. His wife Berry later died on 9/11, on American Airlines Flight 11.

Anthony’s paternal grandfather was Henry Phelps Perkins, Jr. (the son of Henry Phelps Perkins and Stella Lucretia Burnham). Anthony’s grandfather Henry was born in Lowell, Middlesex, Massachusetts. Anthony’s great-grandfather Henry was born in Lyme, Grafton, New Hampshire, the son of Apollos Perkins and Welthea Porter. Stella was the daughter of Walter Burnham, Jr. and Annis Crawford.

Anthony’s paternal grandmother was Helen Virginia Anthony (the daughter of Andrew Varick Stout Anthony and Mary Aurelia Walker). Helen was born in New York. Andrew was a prominent wood engraver, and was the son of John Anthony and Eliza Stout. Mary was the daughter of Samuel Lyon Walker and Mary Follett.

Anthony’s maternal grandfather was Francis/Frank William Rane (the son of William Benjamin Rane and Ellen/Nell Bridget Connelly/Connolly). Francis was born in Michigan. William was the son of John Rane and Irene Coolbaugh. Ellen was the daughter of James Connelly/Connolly, who was Irish, and of E. Preston.

Anthony’s maternal grandmother was Elizabeth M. Bailey (the daughter of John Newton Bailey and Sarah Justa/Elizabeth Esselton). Anthony’s grandmother Elizabeth was born in New York. John was the son of Harvey Bailey and Laura Ann Wright. Sarah was the daughter of John Nash Esselstyn and Harriet Burton Ainsworth.

    When I watched him in Psycho I thought the actor who played him was an Italian or Jewish. I was very surprised of his ethnicity.
