Anthony Kennedy served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, from February 18, 1988 to July 31, 2018. He was previously a Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, from May 30, 1975 to February 18, 1988.

Justice Kennedy is the son of Gladys, who participated in civic activities, and Anthony J. Kennedy, an attorney, with influence in the California State Legislature. He is married to Mary Davis, with whom he has three children.

Justice Kennedy is a Roman Catholic.

Justice Kennedy’s paternal grandfather was named John Xavier Kennedy. John was Irish.
