Anggun is an Indonesian-French singer, songwriter, and television personality. She is the first Indonesian artist to break into the European and American record charts, with the hit “Snow on the Sahara.” She is also known as Anggun C. Sasmi.

Anggun was born Anggun Cipta Sasmi in Jakarta, Indonesia, the daughter of Dien Herdina and Darto Singo, a Javanese writer. Her full name means “grace born of a dream” in Balinese. Her mother is said to have been from the Yogyakartan royal family. She was raised in a Muslim household.

Anggun moved to France in the 1990s. She speaks fluent French and English. Anggun is married to German musician and photographer Christian Kretschmar. She has a daughter with her former husband, French writer Cyril Montana.
