Amedeo was the son of Eugene/Eugénie (Garsin) and Flaminio di Emanuele Modigliani. His family was Jewish. His father was born in Rome. His mother was born in Marseille, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, France, and also had ancestors who were from Tunisia and Italy. His brother, Giuseppe Emanuele Modigliani, was a politician for the PSI.
Amedeo has a daughter, art historian Jeanne Modigliani, with his common-law wife, artist Jeanne Hébuterne; and a son with Simone Thiroux.
Amedeo’s paternal grandfather was Emanuele di Abramo Vita Modigliani (the son of Abramo Vita di Crescenzo Modigliani and Rosa di Emanuele Modigliani). Amedeo’s grandfather Emanuele was born in Rome.
