Alicia has said that the filmmakers of her movie The Danish Girl were:

…obsessed with me not looking Scandinavian and I was like, ‘I’m the only Scandinavian in the whole film.’ They paled my skin, to make me lighter. People say that I’m tanned, but that’s my natural color.

In an interview on Conan O’Brien’s show on May 5, 2015, Conan told Alicia,

there’s a misconception… there’s this belief that everyone who’s Swedish has blonde [hair], blue eyes… clearly you’re proof that that’s not the case.

Alicia replied,

I always get that question… where are your parents really from?… Do you know where your dad’s from?… [My parents] are both from very small villages, from up north and south of Sweden… I’m a quarter Finnish, but that doesn’t really make me much darker.

Alicia’s paternal line can be traced back to her seventh great-grandfather, Clement Clementsson.

Alicia’s paternal grandfather was Erik Yngve Vikander (the son of Lars Erik Vikander and Hilda Kristina Eriksson). Alicia’s grandfather Erik was born in Smedjebacken, Norrbärke, Dalarna County,. Alicia’s maternal grandfather was Anders Gustaf Edvard Fahl (the son of Gustaf Adolf Fahl and Anna Margareta Heideman/von Heideman). Alicia’s grandfather Anders was born in Annedal, Göteborg och Bohus, Sweden. Along with Swedish, Anders also had a small amount of Baltic German ancestry, and descent from Finland-Swedish nobility. Alicia’s great-grandfather Gustaf was the son of Erik Gustaf Georg Anders Henrik Fahl and Maria Andersdotter. Alicia’s great-grandmother Anna was the daughter of Georg Carl Fredrik Heideman/von Heideman and Gustafva Katarina Ulrika Raab.

Alicia Vikander should just take a DNA test.
Many if not most people are surprised when testing, something is off in her woodpile.
She looks very atypical for her stated ancestry on paper.

    • madman says:

Interesting how you, after all those comments disregarding suspicions of hidden ancestries, make a 180 degree turn at this profile. So Simon Bird, Tom Jones and Sean Connery shouldn’t do DNA tests, but Alicia should?

This notion that every individual from a population must necessarily share certain traits is absurd. She clearly takes after her mother to some degree:

      • typepope says:

I made no such “180 degree turn.”
        LOL, trolling hard aren’t we…
I’m very active in studying population genetics and have a very good grasp of phenotypes and an understanding of diversity in populations.
That said, I have studied many pictures of Alicia Vikander and her skin complexion is indeed olive and on par with Mediterranean population averages.

A person whose family descends from “Swedish, small amount of Finnish, distant Baltic German” is VERY unlikely to have an olive complexion and Mediterranean skin tone.

“So Simon Bird, Tom Jones and Sean Connery shouldn’t do DNA tests, but Alicia should?”

Tom Jones has blue eyes, and his over tanning is noted endlessly, he’s not atypical for his region.
Simon Bird was pictured on this site with bearded stubble/frizzy unkempt hair and nerd glasses; that will make nearly any persons features look exotic.
Simon Bird is just a nerdy looking British guy similar to John Oliver in general phenotype.
Sean Connery is Scottish and his features are actually in the norm of the general population, and I’m of Scottish ancestry myself and have relatives that look like him.
You have attempted to spin my post and failed miserably in my opinion.
MY SUGGESTION THAT MS. Vikander GET A DNA TEST WAS IN RESPONSE TO HER DOCUMENTED AND REPEATED CONFUSION, THAT HER DISTINCTLY MEDITERRANEAN APPEARANCE CAUSES WHEN PRESENTING HERSELF AS NORTHERN EUROPEAN, AND PRETTY MUCH MANY PEOPLE SHE COMES INTO CONTACT ASKING HER WHERE SHE REALLY IS FROM.
        You need to stop trolling.

Yes, I’m obviously trolling around here. For your information, I’m one of the main contributers to this site, so please don’t accuse me of trolling.

I’m Swedish, with no other known ancestry. I also have “olive” skin (at least right now, winter is a different story) and know other people who does too. Yes, it’s not the average up here, but it’s far from unheard of.

I never said those British celebrities look atypical, I just found it funny how extremely defensive you were on so many profiles when people claimed the celebrities had some unknown ancestry, and yet you did the exact same thing you accused other people of doing on this one.

The problem is that a lot of people have in their heads that all Scandinavians are blond haired and blue eyed. What you’re saying is that there is a “dark element” in the Scandinavian gene pool that might be like 5% of the population? Right? We have a tendency to have all these preconceived notion what people are supposed to look like. There are also blond Arabs.

  3. chris91 says:

However you spin it, dak eyes and olive skin isn’t native to europeans nvm scandinavians. She even has some sort of dark undereye circles. Ethnic scandinavian will have pinkish undertone, light eyes and hair(not dark brown or black). Even south europeans got it from mixing with mideastern/indians/africans/asians. Since natives from scandinavia “lapps” usually make for light mixes, I assume she must have one of the other. Her parents could pass as semitic or sicilian, especially the mother.

    • Lee says:

Dark eyes aren’t native to Europeans? LOL I’m 99% European might as well say I’m plain “white” my hair’s curly/wavy eyes are hazel (gold, brown, and green)…so it’s unnecessarily to says “whites” can’t have dark features.

“However you spin it, dak eyes and olive skin isn’t native to europeans nvm scandinavians”

Bull—-, absolute bull—-. Most Europeans have dark hair actually and we have a wide variety of eye colours

  4. alexgxo says:

She’s just an ethnic European. And even if she had sami blood, there are many Sami’s now who have blonde hair and blue eyes and look Nordic but just have almond eyes or high cheekbones or snub noses.

Look at her pictures before she grew up. She was PALE AS HELL. She just started spray tanning and spending way more time the sun. Many British, American, Scandinavians and Germanic folks love tanning. She just doesn’t look “Swedish” to me even without the spray tan, actually looks more Southern German or Austria but she is still ethnically Northern European with a little German blood.

    • Lee says:

Seriously, we’ve gotta quit using terms like “black” “white” and “american” American’s an nationality not ethncity it these terms doesn’t describe what our ethnic groups actually are…

      • Burritowithmeltedcheese says:

        America is of mixed ethnicity.

whites, blacks, asians, and hispanics (hispanics can be of any race) most of them are a mixture of southern european and native american, some are of mostly southern european heritage with small amounts of native american.

America is hyper mixed.. Non Hispanic Whites are only 57% of the shared population at the moment (around 64% if you include the white hispanics, I think) 18% non white hispanics, 13 or 14% African American and the rest are small amounts of Asian, Pacific Islander, and American Indian. Every Nation has a certain ethnic group that is the majority, so that’s why some people associate certain countries with a certain ethnicity. because Japan is still a good majority Japanese. Sweden, for now, is a majority white with 8% of Muslims living there.
