I have theories as to why many southern Europeans look darker compared to original northern Europeans, and that theory is that most original southern Europeans are much closer to their Eurasian ancestors, from the ‘Middle Eastern’ area of the world. If you look at many Italians, Greeks, Spaniards and others down there, they could fit in the Middle East quite easily and NOT stand out too much. They have closer relations than, say, a blond hair, blue eyed Germanic or Swedish person has. This is why I think people are so mixed up about this. You people think southern Europeans were there in southern Europe for so long, but I think it was only recent that they came there from the Middle East, and by recent, I mean 4000-4500 years.
This is why we should judge them more how they LOOK in appearance, not so much where they are currently located on some other continent. Just because people are born in Mexico, Brazil, Puerto Rico, doesn’t make them non-Caucasian! These are NATIONALITIES, not genetic groups of people, but apparently the American education system has not informed children about this. They keep them ignorant for a reason, I suppose.
I laugh at how people label others “Latino” when they’re born in so-called “Latin America”, yet no one calls Italians, Spaniards or French people “Latinos” because they’re born in “LATIN EUROPE”.
Why split them up?
Anyway, the Romans said the Germanic ‘barbarians’ had light hair and blue/green eyes. Around the time Rome fell from its original state, the Nordic/Germanic tribes invaded all over southern Europe and mixed with the darker Romans quite a bit. This is why you see many differences in Italians, Spaniards and Greeks’ looks today.
Romans had captured Germanic slaves and they would cut their light (blond or red) hair off and wear them as wigs, as well. You can search for this online and see for yourself. They also used dyes in their hair to lighten it, so did Egyptians, Persians, Greeks, etc.
People, did you fail history class? lol!
Go search and see for yourselves. The Internet is great! A library at your fingertips. :)

Also adding to my recent post? people shouldn’t base someone’s ethnicity on skin color. It never works. Also the Italians in Brazil are quite different from the ones in America. Nearly all of the Italians in America came from the South. In Brazil it was the exact opposite, nearly all of the Italians in Brazil are from the North. Alessandra is not really “dark” she’s more olive without tanning and airbrushing, people should stop believing models skin color is real, They’re models! airbrushing and heavy tanning is common amongst them.

She’s Caucasian, and Brazilian.
Her Italian heritage is a no brainer, i believe Italians are amongst one of the largest Caucasian ethnic groups in Brazil. Rodrigo Santoro from the 300 movie is also Italian. Lucas Malvacini too. Lots of famous Italian-Brazilian models/actors.

She is pretty but not dark to how dark some Italians can get. Sophia Loren was often ridiculed in school because the other white kids thought she looked “Arab.” ]:

PS Italians can be very dark and are olive complected, much more so then say eastern europeans. Italians are the darkest European/white race generally speaking.

No they aren’t, thats a ridiculous statement, I am Italian i am not dark, Italians are no darker than anyone else, they are in a Mediterranean climate and in Mediterranean culture they tend to stay on the beach a lot, people like Raoul Bova are from Sicily and he’s pale as hell when he doesn’t tan. Most American Italians are dark because they tan too much, thats not their natural skin color.

Dio, I beg to differ. You’re stereotyping that all Italians are light skinned. You may mean Northern Italianos are lighter since it’s not at hot as say people in the southern region of Italy. I’m part Sicilian and Romano and you’re correct there are light skinned people. But as well, in Sicily many have dark features and somewhat of a tan. You can’t just base a ethnicity when you compare it to the New York/Jersey “Guidos & Guidettes” who put us TRUE Italians to shame. I’m naturally tan because my grandparents in Sicily are tan. Also, I sometimes get mistaken for lighter skinned mexican. All Italians come in different shades of skin tones, so you need to stop stereotyping. That’s like me saying all black people are as dark as night, is it true? No not all, I’ve seen light skinned black, medium, and dark. Take Lauren London for instance, she’s black and very lighted skinned.

I’m not stereotyping Italians as being light at alll but people calling them “The darkest europeans” are clueless, the majority have light olive skin, they’re not as pale as nordics mostly due to climate, but far from dark i have been all over Lombardy to the most southern part of italy.

You do have a point, I apoligize. My boyfriend is of Italian, Spaniard, Puerto Rican and White descent. But, he looks mexican. So instead of him saying he’s Spaniard, he just goes with saying he’s Mexican. Until they see his younger sister and brother who come as Sicilian and Spaniard as they come. I just do not like how people base someone ethnicity on just their appearance.

and what about the Bolzen regional people…? I think they should rejoin Austria…
and Aoste should rejoin France or Switzerland… and Lampedusa to the Tunisians… and give Sicilia back to the greeks… and Sardeigne and Corse should declare their own independance… and give Apulia to the Albanese and give the Friuli to Croatia … i think that then only Italia will became a pure place… lol

Yes, there are many Italians that are “dark.” However, there are a lot of dark Eastern Europeans as well. Janice Dickinson (who is Polish and Belarusian), Autumn Reeser (who is German), Antoinette Nikprelaj (who is Albanian), Olga Kurylenko (who is Ukranian), Irina Zhuravskaya (who is Ukranian), Rachael Finch (who is half Ukranian and half English), Mila Kunis (who is Ukranian), Tony Curtis (who is Hungarian), and many more are dark Eastern Europeans. Plus, if you have visited the countries, you will see many dark Eastern Europeans as well as many pale ones (they have some odd shade of creamy-white skin).
