Alejandro González Iñárritu, also credited as Alejandro G. Iñárritu, is a Mexican director, screenwriter, composer, and producer. He has twice won the Academy Award for Best Director, for Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014) and The Revenant (2015). He also directed Amores perros and Babel, among other films.

He is the son of Héctor González Gama and Luz María Iñárritu Cervantes. Alejandro is married to editor and graphic designer Maria Eladia Hagerman, with whom he has two children.

Alejandro’s paternal grandfather was named Gales González Oring.

Alejandro’s paternal grandmother was surnamed García.

Alejandro’s maternal grandfather was Alfredo Iñárritu Ramírez de Aguilar (the son of José Sixto Silverio del Corazón de Jesús Iñárritu Flores and María de la Luz Amelia Ramírez de Aguilar Gallardo). Alfredo was born in Oaxaca, and was a prominent lawyer and judge. Silverio was the son of Basque parents, Silverio Iñárritu Gardiazábal, of Gordexola, Biscay, and Elena Flores Mendizábal. Alejandro’s great-grandmother Luz was the daughter of Juan Ramón Ramírez de Aguilar Sandoval and Rosenda/Rosa Soledad de Jesús Arenas, later Gallardo Arenas.

Alejandro’s maternal grandmother was Luz María Iñárritu y Cervantes (the daughter of José María Miguel Luis Francisco Nicolás Hipólito Higinio Manuel Cervantes y Noreña and María Celada y Aguirre). Alejandro’s grandmother Luz María was born in Ciudad de México, Distrito Federal. Miguel was the son of Manuel María José de Jesús Rafael Brígido Úrsulo Pedro Pascual Francisco Javier y de Asís Juan Nepomuceno Cervantes Imaz and María de la Luz Noreña Garduño. Alejandro’s great-grandmother María was the daughter of José Epifanio Celada Tapia and Luz Aguirre Romero.

Alejandro’s matrilineal line can be traced to his third great-grandmother, María de Jesús Romero (c. 1810, Tlalnepantla de Baz, State of Mexico – between 1873 and 1889).

    his paternal grandfather’s mother carries an interesting surname, “Oring”. If that is the correct spelling, it’s a Germanic surname. On familysearch.org there are Orings from Romania, Austria and Sweden.

    his maternal great-grandfather José Sixto Silverio del Corazón de Jesús Iñárritu Flores’ parents were Basque. Gordexola is in Basque Country and Mendizábal is a Basque surname too.
